Application Process

SMHS engages in a rolling admissions process. Because interviews and acceptances are offered as applications and letters of recommendation are received and processed, we strongly urge every applicant to complete his or her file as early as possible. Please review the following information carefully to avoid delays in the processing of the application.

In addition, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) provides resources and support for prospective applicants who are in the early stages of considering a medical career, for those currently preparing to apply to medical schools, and for current and graduating medical students. Please review the AAMC Pre-Med Facebook page and the Aspiring Docs program.

GW MD Program Application Process

Step 1: Complete the AMCAS Application & Letters of Recommendation

Applicants must complete an online application from the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) and submit via the AMCAS website by November 15.

To complete their file, applicants are required to submit either:

A Pre-Health or Pre-Medical Committee Letter (required if available to you) OR

Three individuals letters, at least one of which must be from a science faculty member familiar with your academic work.

► GW participates in the AMCAS letter service. All letters of recommendation must be submitted to AMCAS, which then electronically forwards your letters. Please DO NOT send letters directly to our office.

► Letters may be verified for authenticity. It is not the policy of the Office of Admissions to provide access to letters to the applicant, the letter writer or to any third party.

► Please note: In addition to the required letter(s) listed above, applicants who are currently enrolled in graduate or professional school programs or who have previously graduated or withdrawn from them, should provide an official letter of good standing from the institution. This includes attendance to a dental school or any other previous medical school. This letter SHOULD NOT be sent to AMCAS as part of the primary application. It should be sent directly to GW after an invitation to interview. This letter should be sent directly from your registrar or program director.

Step 2: Complete the GW Medical School Secondary Application

After receipt of an AMCAS application, GW will email each applicant an invitation to complete the secondary application. Please note that GW does not screen on the basis of the AMCAS application and we invite all applicants who submit an AMCAS application to GW to complete the secondary application.

Applicants must return the completed secondary application and pay the $140 application fee to the Admissions Office no later than December 15. Applicants are advised to complete the secondary application early. Files are not processed until after a completed, signed application AND the application fee are received.

Step 3: Complete your File for Review

Your file will be considered complete when all of the letters designated in the AMCAS System are marked as complete. If you submit additional letters after your file is complete, they will be included in the review of your file ONLY if your file has not been reviewed.
