The GME Office provides oversight for all Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved residencies at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and all of its affiliate institutions. The GME Office has most of the institutional administrative responsibility for the residency programs and maintains the permanent file for each resident. The primary objectives of this office are to assist residents in their relationship to the necessary administrative process and to assure that residents' responsibilities are met.

The Graduate Medical Education Committee of the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, under the leadership of the Chair/DIO, with support from the Office of Graduate Medical Education, will provide oversight and administration for ACGME-accredited, School of Medicine-sponsored residency and fellowship (GME) programs to ensure that all GME programs meet or exceed ACGME Institutional, Common, and Program Requirements.
The GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences expects its GME programs to provide, through its faculty, competency-based, comprehensive and coordinated, cost-effective post-graduate education that is responsive to the trainees’ needs and that embodies the ethical and humanistic qualities necessary of all health care professionals. In addition, the programs are expected to emphasize the delivery of high quality health care with a strong community orientation.
The GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences will provide opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations in education, research, diagnosis and treatment, bringing together the basic sciences and clinical enterprises of the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences. The GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences will provide the faculty the necessary support to participate in scholarly activities at this and other participating institutions. The GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences will provide the necessary financial support for administrative, educational, and clinical resources, including personnel, to ensure quality GME programs.
The intent of the School of Medicine’s support is to ensure that residency/fellowship programs sponsored by this institution provide organized educational programs to facilitate residents’ professional and personal development while ensuring safe and appropriate care of patients, under faculty guidance and supervision. The quality of the GME learning and working environment and the educational experiences in each program will be assessed annually to measure the achievement of educational outcomes and to improve the program.
The School’s commitment to excellence in graduate medical education is supported by the University governing body and the School of Medicine administration (represented by the Vice President for Health Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences), and the GME leadership (represented by the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education/DIO/Chair Graduate Medical Education Committee).
