FICA Tax Refund Information

Claim Update

Updated January 15, 2013 – GW is planning to process a first batch of payments in March 2013 for all years in the claim except 1998-2000 (which we are still working with the IRS to secure payment). A letter will be mailed to you a couple weeks prior to payment that will detail the FICA tax refund amount being paid for each year, as well as interest.

If you’ve recently moved or changed banks, now is the time to update your information with us so that the check or direct deposit makes it to you. Address changes can be sent to tax@gwu.edu. Direct deposit updates can use the direct deposit form to update banking information. Please fax this to the number indicated on the form, or return to tax@gwu.edu. Write “MR FICA Claim” on top of the form.

Once 1998-2000 are settled with the IRS, we will update this website and process a second batch of payments. Exact timing will depend upon the IRS.

ATTENTION:  The Medical Resident FICA refund consent process has now closed. New consent forms will no longer be accepted.

Former GW Residents (January 1, 1995 - March 31, 2005)

The IRS has made an administrative decision that medical residents may be eligible for a refund for the FICA (social security and Medicare) taxes that were withheld for those who were residents during the period between January 1, 1995 through March 31, 2005, and it has established a process by which refunds may be requested by institutions on behalf of former residents.

CLAIM UPDATE: GW has filed the Medical Resident FICA tax refund claim with the IRS. A response by the IRS is expected sometime in 2011. The exact date will be determined by the IRS; however, we will provide updates as they become available.
