Self-Assessments and Mentor Committees

Updated 8/25/2025

GW SMHS supports faculty scholars in their career development, and encourages the formation of faculty mentoring committees for junior investigators to facilitate their research and scholarship.

Assembling a Mentoring Committee

Mentoring committees often include three faculty, typically including a more senior member of the home department/ member of departmental APT, another member outside the home department and a third member to stimulate research progress. These committees do not include the Chair, but serve as advocates to the scholar.

Committee members agree to meet twice a year to review progress in research, clinical duties, teaching, and service (using templates below).

Tenure-stream faculty participate in mid-tenure review in their third year.

Investigators complete self-assessments of current strengths and gaps and develop a plan to describe steps to achieve their career goals in academic medicine.

Individual Development Plans and Wellness and Resilience

Self-assessment and planning tools include including individual development plans, clinical research appraisal inventories, wellness and resilience plan, etc.

Wellness and Resilience help you sustain a healthy career. Professionals in medicine and the sciences have lifestyles that we know put us at risk. When we personally engage in healthy habits, we are more likely to be effective role models. Create and update your Wellness and Resilience Action Plan, with conscious choices for self care.

Periodic Reporting

Structured follow-on meetings with the mentor team every six months help to chart progress and overcome challenges. Scholars are encouraged to prepare a short report and/or powerpoint presentation that covers major areas:
