Research Access to GW Hospital

Updated 8/25/2025

Medical students who need research access to GW Hospital records must work with their GW research advisor who will act as your Sponsor.

In general, the medical student must

  • Complete online Cerner training. Save the certificate on the computer. This training only works in internet explorer, and on an MFA or hospital computer.
  • Complete both Information Security and Remote Access to Hospital Computer Networks forms. Information Security and Privacy Agreement
  • Send the completed forms and the Cerner training certificate to: GWUHResearch [at] gwu-hospital [dot] com (GWUHResearch[at]gwu-hospital[dot]com

    )
  • You will need to provide the IRB approved project number in the body of the email. To prevent having view only access (where you can’t open charts), ask GWUH for medical student view, or give them the name of a medical student doing clinicals currently, who will model access for that person.
  • To get a badge for the hospital, the clinical observer document contains the steps to get a badge. You need a current negative PPD and flu vaccine, as well as a copy of your driver’s license. There are some forms you’ll have to fill out, along with providing proof that you are on the study roster of the IRB approved project.
