Prepare an Application for External Support
Communicate your interest in applying for funding with your research mentor. In addition to the opportunities listed here, the mentor may know of additional opportunities in the field. Most fellowship applications are due January-March for summer support, so you should start early! External fellowships must run through the Business Office related to your faculty sponsor.
Contact these folks as soon as you are thinking about a specific fellowship:
- GW researchers: contact the Research Administrator, Julia Bellafiore (jbellafiore [at] gwu [dot] edu (jbellafiore[at]gwu[dot]edu)).
- Children’s National Hospital: contact the administrator associated with that Division, or Stephanie Bair, Director of the Research Business Office, (sbair [at] childrensnational [dot] org (sbair[at]childrensnational[dot]org)).
Confirm any required registrations, including IRB. Faculty research mentors are responsible for IRB application, and for adding medical students to existing IRB protocols, and routing through GW or CNH. Check with your research mentor about this to confirm.
Submit a GW Intent to Submit a Proposal form as soon as you are considering an external fellowship. While many external medical student fellowship proposals require that you submit the proposal to their agency website, you must also submit the proposal information to GW. We suggest you turn this in at least four weeks before a proposal is due: it's never too early!
At least 5-7 days before the due date, submit the proposal package (including all budgets, forms, application materials, and signatures) to Julia Bellafiore (jbellafiore [at] gwu [dot] edu (jbellafiore[at]gwu[dot]edu)) or your assigned administrator for final review. GW Pre-award will continue sign offs with financial directors and the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR).The Research Administrator will email you when you can submit the final proposal to the agency website.
GW Internal Fellowship Applications
Medical students at GW are invited to apply for the W.T. Gill Summer Fellowship for select basic, clinical or translational research internships at GW, CNH, or the VA. Please see the program description and selection criteria for requirements.
GW W.T. Gill Fellowships (Due Feb. 15, 2026)
Medical students at GW are invited to apply for the Health Services Scholarship program for research in community health, global health, health policy, medical education and other fields. Please see the program description for requirements.
GW Health Services Scholarship Program (Due March 13, 2026)
You may list an IRB pending application (with date submitted) in your application, but summer fellowships will not be released without an IRB that is approved by June 1. This is a common reason that applications fail!
