The mission of the Center for Injury Prevention and Control is to reduce death and disability from intentional and unintentional injury, with the goal of promoting existing prevention methods optimizing trauma care through education, collaboration with the community, and engaging in research contributing to the advancement of the field.
The Center for Otolaryngology Microsurgery Education and Training (COMET) is a six station lab that will be used as a surgical training and simulation center for otology and lateral skull-base surgery.
The Katzen Cancer Research Center is committed to fostering pioneering scientific research, superior clinical care, and advanced education in order to improve the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cancer. In order to achieve this mission, the Katzen Cancer Research Center seeks to provide an interdisciplinary facility to integrate basic and clinical investigators, medical educators, clinicians, health policy experts and community leaders.
Epilepsy affects one out of every 100 individuals and can affect the person's life at many levels. Uncontrolled seizures, for example, necessitate refraining from driving and decrease the person's employability. They also increase the risk of depression, memory decline, and increased mortality. In addition, the stigma associated with epilepsy increases these burdens tremendously. The mission of the Epilepsy Center at George Washington University is to stop seizures and reverse associated health and social problems, improving the quality of life of persons with epilepsy.
The mission of the Biomedical Informatics Center is to leverage biomedical information, including EHR, social media, and omics data, to predict and improve patient outcomes by developing and using cutting-edge computational technology.
The George Washington University is actively involved in a wide range of cancer-related activities, from basic science and clinical research to outstanding patient care and health policy. As a means of maintaining its commitment to expanding its efforts in the fight against cancer, GW plans to leverage the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the GW Medical Faculty Associates, the GW Hospital, and the Milken Institute School of Public Health to re-focus and re-energize the university’s efforts in cancer research and patient care. For cancer research, these four organizational pillars have established a firm goal of obtaining NCI designation as a cancer center within 10 years, and for cancer care, they seek to position GW and its cancer center as the providers of choice in the Washington, D.C. area. To achieve these goals, GW leadership has embarked on the creation of the GW Cancer Center (GWCC), which will incorporate all existing cancer-related activities and serve as the platform for future development.
Working together with the GWU Hospital and GW Medical Faculty Associates, the GW Cancer Institute brings multidisciplinary clinical, research, education, and outreach programs together in a comprehensive approach to cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. GWCI is dedicated to understanding cancer disparities and the unequal burden of cancer in vulnerable populations and to eliminating cancer health disparities in metropolitan Washington DC.
The GW Center for Healthcare Innovation and Policy Research (GW-CHIPR) formerly known as Office for Clinical Practice Innovation (OCPI) is dedicated to promoting new health-related research initiatives, dissemination, and implementation of novel methods to organize and deliver medical care.
The Center for Integrative Medicine is dedicated to creating a healing environment in which patients have access to a medical doctors and variety of complementary and alternative therapies to promote healing and wellness.
The mission of the GW Heart & Vascular Institute is to promote cardiac and vascular research, education, and community service with the goal of accelerating the pace of scientific discovery, reducing mortality and improving the quality of life of Americans with heart and vascular disease. To achieve these goals, Institute seeks to provide an interdisciplinary structure to integrate basic and clinical investigators, clinicians, medical educators, health policy experts and community leaders.
Jointly supported by SMHS, the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, and the Office of the Vice-President for Research, GWIN promotes research and training throughout several departments and affiliated institutions at GW in the mechanisms of normal and pathologic brain function. The research interests of the faculty include behavioral, evolutionary, systems, cellular, and developmental neuroscience.
Since its inception in 2001 as the first university-chartered Institute for Spirituality and Health in the United States, GWish has sustained a leadership role in building a more compassionate system of health care, a system premised not only on concrete scientific principles but that also addresses the psychological, social and spiritual needs of patients.
The Institute for Biomedical Sciences (IBS) is the administrative and academic home for interdisciplinary Ph.D. training in the Biomedical Sciences. The IBS oversees a core curriculum and assists outstanding matriculating graduate students in navigating their first year of graduate training while he or she selects a Ph.D. Program and explores the research opportunities available for dissertation projects.
The McCormick Genomic and Proteomic Center, a premier genomics research center based at GW SMHS, seeks to discover, validate, and establish key molecular events in normal and cancer cells, and to contribute to global cancer genome research and education.
The Research Center for Neglected Diseases of Poverty conducts basic and translational research to gain deeper understanding of and to control and treat neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) as well as neglected infections of poverty (NIPs).
The mission of the Rodham Institute is to reduce health disparities in Washington, D.C. through education, community involvement, research, and policy. Named in honor of the late Ms. Dorothy E. Rodham, the Rodham Institute is guided by respect for the communities we serve, commitment to sustainability, and dedication to collaboration and sharing of information and resources.
The Reagan Institute’s mission is to improve emergency care, education, training, and consultative support. Key initiatives of the Reagan Institute include Injury Prevention and Control, the medical aspects of disaster planning, preparedness and response, and the enhancement of emergency medical services throughout the world.
The Ronald and Joy Paul Foundation, with a $2.5 million gift, is establishing the GW/Ron and Joy Paul Kidney Center to address the urgent need for community awareness of kidney diagnosis, treatment, and donation.
WISE is the premier metropolitan center dedicated to innovative technologies to enhance patient care. These emerging technologies incorporate minimally invasive surgical techniques that provide exceptional patient care while producing superior cosmesis and faster patient recovery.

As the lead site and only member of a National Institutes of Health’s Autism Center of Excellence (ACE) network in the mid-Atlantic, ANDI will harness the expertise of its researchers and clinicians to provide top-notch clinical services in DC and Northern Virginia while connecting faculty, families affected by ASD and policymakers to tackle tough questions that continue to divide the ASD community.
The Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center at The GW Medical Faculty Associates, provides a full array of allergy services for patients from adolescence through adulthood, and offers diagnosis and treatment of allergic eye, ear, nose and sinus conditions, asthma, hives, bee sting or bite allergies, drug allergies, anaphylaxis, food allergies, and eczema and other skin allergies. The Center also diagnoses and treats immune deficiency disease.
The Breast Care Center offers a comprehensive program for early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of breast cancer, as well as services for those at high risk. Combining state-of-the-art technology with superior medical and surgical care, the Center is staffed by a team of nationally recognized specialists trained to evaluate benign and malignant breast disease. Patients have access to the range of breast imaging modalities and the newest minimally invasive techniques used for diagnosis.
The Center for Pelvic Health at The GW Medical Faculty Associates is a unique program where urologists, colorectal surgeons and gynecologists work together to treat bladder and bowel control problems. Patients are active participants in attaining an accurate diagnosis and determining the best treatment program to meet their needs.

Otolaryngology is the branch of medicine which deals with diagnosis and treatment of the Ear, Nose, Throat and of head and neck disorders. At The GW Medical Faculty Associates, our ENTs treat not only general Rhinology and Sinus conditions, and airway obstructions, they specialize in the care for oral and thryoid cancers, endocrine surgeries, voice therapy, vocal cord surgery, skull base surgery, cochlear implants, and facial reconstruction/facial cosmetic procedures.
The specialists at The Epilepsy Center at The GW Medical Faculty Associates understand treatments should also be personalized. To accurately and effectively make a diagnosis, The Epilepsy Center provides inpatient and outpatient facilities equipped with imaging and electroencephalogram (EEG) technologies to map out the locations of abnormal brain activity. The Center also offers 24-hour video-EEG monitoring of seizures, so patients can quickly receive a diagnosis and begin treatment.
The GW Medical Faculty Associates Prostate Cancer Clinic is a multi-disciplinary, patient-centered program providing services in sexual health, urology, radiation oncology, hematology/oncology, and nutrition services.
In trauma care, every minute counts, which is why the Trauma and Acute Care surgery team stands ready at any time of the day or night to evaluate and treat any injury. Trauma surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, trauma-trained nurses, anesthesiologists, and operating room personnel are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide the premier academic trauma care in the DC Metropolitan Area. Our Trauma and Acute Care surgery team also works with a wide range of specialists—including neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, otolaryngologists, and rehabilitation specialists—to provide comprehensive multidisciplinary care. The Trauma Center is a Level I verified facility, which is the highest designated trauma level. The Trauma Center is prepared to service a diverse group of patients, from area residents to visiting dignitaries and heads of state.

Cohen, MD, The Center serves as the interprofessional home for faculty across departments and schools at The George Washington University who are working to improve the lives and health of older persons through education, research, and work in clinical arenas, with particular focus on the potential of the humanities and the creative arts to promote healing and wellness throughout the life span.
CTSI-CN is a resource for investigators and community members. Its primary objective is to transform the local, regional, and national environment in order to increase the efficiency and speed of clinical and translational research across the country.
A joint initiative between SMHS and the Milken Institute School of Public Health, the District of Columbia Developmental Center for AIDS Research (DC D-CFAR) seeks to contribute to the reduction of HIV/AIDS morbidity and mortality both locally in Washington, D.C. and globally, serve as a Center of Excellence for HIV/AIDS-related epidemiology, biostatistics and public health laboratory research at GW, promote training in HIV/AIDS research that will contribute to the development of the next generation of HIV/AIDS researchers, and encourage scientific collaboration with HIV/AIDS researchers throughout GW and Washington, DC.
The Sabin Vaccine Institute PDP works on developing vaccines for the more than 700 million people suffering from hookworm in the world today. Established in 2000 with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Sabin PDP (originally the Human Hookworm Vaccine Initiative) is the first and only PDP in the world developing a vaccine for human hookworm infection.
