The George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) celebrated one of its own, New York State Commissioner of Health Howard Alan Zucker, MD ’82, LLM, on May 18 at the 62nd Annual Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society (AΩA) Awards and Induction Banquet.
Graduates from SMHS health sciences programs received their diplomas on May 20 at Lisner Auditorium in front of friends, family and faculty. 
Jennifer Bires, LICSW, OSW-C, program coordinator of patient support services at the GW Cancer Center, was named the 2017 AOSW Oncology Social Worker of the Year.

Lieutenant General Nadja Y. West, M.D. '88, will serve as the keynote speaker at the 2017 M.D. Diploma Ceremony, held on Sunday, May 21, at 2:30 p.m. at Lisner Auditorium. She will also receive an honorary degree of Doctor of Public Service at GW Commencement, held on the National Mall. 
GW's Yolanda Haywood, M.D., RESD ’87, CERT ’04, B.S. ’81, and J. Keith Melancon, M.D., Ph.D., were named among BlackDoctor.org’s 2017 Top Blacks in Healthcare honorees.
Residents in the SMHS Department of Dermatology residency program are quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with, impressing not only through their clinical work, but also research; the department is generating an impressive list of awards to prove it.
