Professor Crandall studies the computational biology, population genetics, and bioinformatics of a variety of organisms, from crustaceans to agents of infectious diseases.
His areas of interests are: medical simulation, image-guided surgery, medical informatics, visualization, and computer animation.
Areas of research include treatment of neck fractures, ochronotic arthopathy, and how surgeons make decisions about treatment when evidence is inconclusive.

Dr. Shao's research applies mathematical knowledge and skills to solving medical informatics problems. He developed several new methods for informatics tasks, including ICD-based topic modeling and stable topic extraction.
