SMHS Releases 2013 Match Day Results

Students pose with match letters and Dean Goldberg

WASHINGTON (March 15, 2013) – The George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) congratulates its fourth-year medical students, who were “matched” for residency at a Match Day ceremony earlier today.

A myriad of emotions were on display as students at GW SMHS, as well as fourth-year medical students across the country, simultaneously opened envelopes  revealing where they will spend the next several years of their medical education, fulfilling their residency requirements.

“Match Day is a phenomenal day in the life of a medical student,” said Jeffrey S. Akman, M.D., dean of GW SMHS and vice president for health affairs at GW. “It’s when our medical students learn where they will be doing their residency training. Our students match with some of the leading medical institutions in the country, including GW, in every specialty that you can imagine.”

Students were placed at the George Washington University Hospital, Children’s National Medical Center, UCLA Medical Center, the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, and Yale-New Haven Hospital, among others.

“At GW we bring our students from all over the country, from all over the world in some cases, to get their education here,” said Scott Schroth, M.D., M.P.H., associate dean for administration at GW SMHS. “Today they’ve matched and are spreading out again. They are literally going to different programs all over the country, from the west coast to the east coast, and everywhere in-between. It’s always exciting to be able to send them, in many cases, back to where they grew up and have looked forward to being physicians.”

Following the ceremony, GW SMHS third-year medical students brought out champagne. A luncheon followed, sponsored by the GW medical school alumni association, for students, parents and friends who participated in the festivities.
