Dr. Jeffrey Berger Publishes Anesthesiology Core Review: Part Two Advanced Exam

Jeffrey Berger, M.D., associate dean for graduate medical education and associate professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, published the review book, Anesthesiology Core Review: Part Two Advanced Exam. He co-edited the book with Brian S. Freeman, M.D., program director and associate professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at Georgetown University Medical Center.

The Anesthesiology Core Review: Part Two Advanced Exam is for anesthesiology residents who sit for board certification at the end of their residency training. The American Board of Anesthesiology provides residents a list of keywords that are important to the content covered in the exam. Berger and Freeman expanded this list, giving two to three pages of content for each of the 200 keywords, written primarily by physicians in the Washington, D.C. area.

“To have an organized, alphabetical, quick resource when studying for a major exam is very valuable,” said Berger. “We envision this being used in conjunction with other resources, like a question bank or online learning modules.”

The book has over 45 authors from GW. Almost all of the authors are from the D.C. area, either from GW, Children’s National Health System, Georgetown University Medical Center, MedStar Washington Hospital Center, and Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences.

There was a change to the board review exam three years ago, which created a need for study resources tailored to the new exam format.

“As the program director for the anesthesiology residency program at Georgetown, I immediately knew I wanted to work with Dr. Berger, the program director for the anesthesiology residency program at the George Washington University, to see if we could put together a high-quality study material for trainees around the country,” said Freeman.

The Anesthesiology Core Review: Part Two Advanced Exam was published by McGraw-Hill Education.
