The George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) Department of Biomedical Laboratory Sciences (BLS) gathered on May 16, 2025, to hold an intimate celebration of their graduates from across the country and around the world.

Marcia Firmani, PhD, MSPH, chair of the Department of Biomedical Laboratory Sciences, and the director of the Master of Science in Health Sciences Clinical Microbiology program, welcomed the graduates and their families, noting how important the degree they are receiving truly is to health care. Firmani said, “we are the ones in the lab running all the laboratory tests, so that you can get the appropriate diagnosis and treatment, a very important role in the health care field.”

She continued by underlining the importance of their work citing “70 percent of patient diagnosis are made based on laboratory tests.”

The BLS ceremony continued with a pinning of the graduates and recognizing their hard work and outstanding academic achievement. Firmani took the opportunity to call particular attention to Michael Dobler, MSHS ’25 in molecular diagnostic science, for his first-place poster at GW Research Day.
