Daniel Stein, MD, MHS, FACS, to Serve as the Chair of the GW Department of Urology

The GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences and the GW Medical Faculty Associates are pleased to announce that Daniel Stein, MD, MHS, FACS, will serve as Chair of the Department of Urology. Stein has served as Interim Chair since May 2023 and has provided steady leadership during a period of clinical, educational, and organizational growth for the department. 

“Dr. Stein has been a trusted and highly effective leader at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences and the GW Medical Faculty Associates for many years and stepped into leadership of the department of Urology as interim chair with wisdom and energy.  With daily demonstration of clinical and academic excellence and strong partnerships across the institution, Dr. Stein leads the department by example, inspiring outstanding patient care, education and training, and professionalism in support of our missions by all who serve in the department. I know he will continue to lead the department of urology with great distinction,” said Barbara Bass, MD, FACS, Professor of Surgery, Walter A. Bloedorn Chair of Administrative Medicine, Vice President for Health Affairs, Dean of the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences. 

As Chair, Stein will lead the department’s clinical, academic, and educational missions as the GW academic health system continues its journey toward preeminence as a healthcare provider in the nation’s capital. As a member of the senior leadership team, he will focus on expanding the department’s clinical footprint, strengthening academic programs, and advancing the department’s regional and national profile. 

During his tenure as Interim Chair, Stein has guided the department through a period of growth and modernization, with an emphasis on faculty engagement, high-quality patient care, and the continued development of specialized clinical services. He has worked closely with institutional leadership to position the department for long-term stability and future expansion. 

Stein joined the GW faculty in 2015 and previously served as Residency Program Director. He has played a central role in undergraduate and graduate medical education and remains deeply committed to training the next generation of urologists. 

Clinically, Stein specializes in genitourinary trauma, urologic reconstruction, and neurogenic bladder care. Under his leadership, the department has continued to build strength in these areas through the delivery of complex, multidisciplinary care and the development of specialized clinical programs.

Stein’s scholarly work has focused on outcomes in reconstructive urology, trauma, and urinary incontinence, with particular emphasis on quality of life and patient-reported outcomes. He is a member of the American Urological Association, Society of Academic Urologists and the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons. Stein earned his bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from UCLA and a master’s degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health focusing on international disease control. He attended the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, graduating with Alpha Omega Alpha honors, and completed his urology residency at Northwestern University. He subsequently completed fellowship training in Genitourinary Reconstruction and Trauma at the Detroit Medical Center.

Stein began serving as Chair of the Department of Urology on Nov. 1, 2025.
