The George Washington University’s 8th Annual Cardiovascular Symposium, organized by the GW Heart & Vascular Institute, took place on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025 at the American College of Cardiology Heart House in Washington, DC. More than 150 participants, including virtual participation from Honduras, Jordan, and several other countries, attended the symposium designed and led by Course Directors Marco Mercader, MD; Andrew Choi, MD ’07, BA ’03; and Ramesh Mazhari, MD, MSHS ’14, RESD ’06

The annual event is designed for clinical staff involved in multidisciplinary cardiology care, including cardiologists, internal medicine physicians, nurses, physician assistants and other health care professionals. The symposium offered attendees a comprehensive overview of the prevention, diagnosis, and management of cardiovascular diseases. New topics included updated guidelines in hypertension, risk assessment and cholesterol management, heart prevention in patients with cancer, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, shock, minimally invasive catheter-based treatments of aortic and tricuspid heart disease, as well as novel methods of cardiac pacing.

This year, for the first time, a patient-centered event titled “Healthy Hearts, Healthier Lives: Taking Control of Your Heart Health,” was added for those living with heart disease in the DMV community to learn from GW’s cardiology and primary care experts about nutrition, as well as specialized programs for heart prevention through weight management, hypertension control, and smoking cessation.

“There are over 128 million Americans at risk for, or living with, cardiovascular disease. This symposium leveraged the breadth and depth of nationally leading experts in cardiology at GW Medicine to enable professionals taking care of heart patients across the DMV and globally to enhance cardiovascular health through updates and innovation,” said Choi, professor of medicine and of radiology, as well as director of noninvasive cardiology, and co-director of multimodality cardiac imaging at GW Medicine.
