WASHINGTON (July 1, 2014) — The George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) is pleased to announce that Frank A. Simon, M.D., will serve as senior advisor to the vice president for health affairs. In this role, Simon will be responsible for helping to prepare SMHS for an accreditation site visit from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
“Dr. Simon is a national leader in the accreditation of medical education programs. He has already served as a valuable consultant to the GW SMHS and I am very pleased that he will be joining my leadership team,” said Jeffrey S. Akman, M.D. ’81, RESD ’85, Walter A. Bloedorn Professor of Administrative Medicine, vice president for health affairs, and dean of SMHS.
As senior advisor to the vice president for health affairs, Simon will provide keen insight into the intent and expectations of the LCME. He will aid SMHS faculty and staff in ensuring all content meets LCME requirements and that those leading the LCME Data Collection Instrument and Self-Study completion process are up-to-date on any changes to standards. Simon will give recommendations on new processes and policies; he will also suggest standards, as well as methods for audits, that strengthen continuous process improvement efforts at SMHS. Simon will also represent SMHS at the Association of American Medical Colleges and LCME-related conferences.
Simon served for 25 years in positions of leadership at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School prior to being appointed by the American Medical Association as the Secretary of the LCME. As a consultant since 2007, he has helped more than 40 new and existing medical schools with their LCME accreditation process. He is currently an adjunct professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
Simon is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and served on the United States Medical Licensing Examination Committee on Individualized Review. He also is a reviewer for the journal Academic Medicine.
Simon assumed this role on June 3, 2014.
