Anton Sidawy, MD, MPH, FACS, Lewis B. Saltz Chair and Professor of Surgery at the George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences, served as editor of the definitive reference for the diagnosis and treatment of circulatory diseases, Rutherford's Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, 9th Edition.
This two-volume, 200 chapters, and over 2500 page textbook was co-edited by Bruce A. Perler, MD, MBA, professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins Medicine, and published in association with the Society for Vascular Surgery. The textbook includes guidance from the most respected and innovative global thought leaders and clinical and basic science experts in the field. The print version comes with an online interactive version with videos illustrating complex procedures.
This edition includes information on new technological advances impacting both the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease.

The book will always carry the name of its founder, the late Robert B. Rutherford, MD, FACS, FRCS, former professor emeritus at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, whose impact on the education of students, trainees, and practicing clinicians has been immeasurable. To ensure that this text endures, Rutherford entrusted the Society for Vascular Surgery with the production of future editions and selecting editors that would carry on the tradition he established. This edition boasts an additional 31 chapters over the previous edition, and includes the totality of care delivered by specialists involved in the prevention and management of vascular diseases: open surgery, endovascular therapy, and the medical management of patients with the entire spectrum of circulatory diseases.
Sidawy completed a vascular surgery fellowship at Boston University Hospital and earned an MPH in health care administration from GW. He has had an impressive career as a surgeon and researcher. After 10 years as chief of vascular surgery and then a 14-year tenure as chief of surgery at the VA Medical Center in Washington, D.C. he assumed the position of chair of the Department of Surgery at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences. In his last 10 years as a faculty member at the VA, he also served as the director of the Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program at Georgetown University.
He has to his credit more than 135 peer-reviewed articles, authored or co-authored over 55 chapters and numerous abstracts, and made several national and international presentations. His publications span the clinical, research, and educational fields. Sidawy recently concluded his term as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Vascular Surgery, the premier journal in the specialty; he launched the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders in 2013 and the Journal of Vascular Surgery-Cases in 2015 and served as the founding editor-in-chief during that time. He has also edited two additional textbooks: the Basic Science of Vascular Disease in 1997 and the Diabetic Foot, Lower Extremity Arterial Disease, and Limb Salvage in 2006.
Sidawy currently serves on the Board of Regents of the American College of Surgeons. He formerly served as president of the Society for Vascular Surgery, the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, the Eastern Vascular Society, the Chesapeake Vascular Society, the Metropolitan Washington Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, and the Washington Academy of Surgery. He also served a six-year tenure on the Vascular Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery.
In addition, he has received a number of awards and honors, including the LaSalle D. Lefall award for “outstanding contributions to the profession of surgery and to the entire metropolitan Washington community” from the Metropolitan Washington Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. In addition, the chapter named a lectureship after Sidawy for his years of service to the chapter. Also, the 2009 New York Vascular Surgery Fellows Competition Award was named after Sidawy.
