Robert Zeman, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Radiology at the George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), recently received the William T. Thorwarth Jr., MD, Award at the American College of Radiology’s (ACR) annual meeting, ACR 2022, in Washington, D.C., in April.

According to an ACR Announcements, the award, from the ACR Economics and Health Policy Department, “recognizes individuals who demonstrate outstanding contributions to the field of health policy and economics for radiology.”

“I’m honored to have received this national recognition and join the distinguished group of prior Thorwarth Award recipients,” said Zeman. “As a longtime member of the ACR community, I have welcomed the opportunity to advocate for our profession and to shape policies that affect our patients’ lives. I look forward to continuing this effort.”

Zeman has been a long time fellow of the ACR, and served on the ACR Commission on Economics for 17 years, and on the CMS Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory Committee Panel for four years. He also played a pivotal role in deciding national and local Medicare coverage determinations for imaging services such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography policies, the ACR noted.

“Dr. Zeman’s contributions within the ACR, specifically his commitment to the Contractor Advisory Committee Network, as well as his involvement at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and other organizations, has helped amplify the voice of radiology,” said Gregory Nicola, MD, chair of the ACR Commission on Economics, in a Press Releases. “He continues to give back by educating future generations of radiologists, and I am honored to present him with this prestigious award.”
