GW SMHS Mourns the Passing of Dr. Allan Weingold

Dear Colleagues,

Dr. Allan Weingold posing for a portrait

With great sadness, I share with you news of the passing of Allan B. Weingold, MD. Dr. Weingold was an internationally-recognized academic obstetrician-gynecologist and one of the most consequential figures in the contemporary history of the George Washington University medical enterprise.

Dr. Weingold joined the faculty of the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) in 1973 as chair and professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Educating thousands of medical students and hundreds of residents and fellows, he served in this position for nearly two decades leading the department to national prominence. In the following years, he served in many leadership positions, including as chairman of the GW Medical Faculty Associates Governing Board and vice president for medical affairs and executive dean of SMHS. During his tenure, he held two endowed chairs – the Oscar I. and Mildred S. Dodek Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology (now named the Oscar I. and Mildred S. Dodek and Joan B. and Oscar I. Dodek Jr. Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology) and the Walter A. Bloedorn Professor of Administrative Medicine.

In the 1990s, Dr. Weingold served as the top administrator for the five entities that comprised the GW Medical Center at the time, including SMHS, the GW Hospital, the GW Medical Faculty Associates, the GW School of Public Health, and the GW Health Plan. He was central to the negotiations that took place with Universal Health Services regarding the ownership and operations of the GW Hospital that led to the building of the current hospital facility.

Dr. Weingold retired in 1997 and lived just blocks away from GW – enabling him to continue to be involved in many ways, such as serving as the inaugural chair of the SMHS Dean’s Council that was established in 2005. He served in this role for nearly ten years.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Weingold, and his four children and their families, including Roberta W. Greenberg, MA '80, BA '78, and her spouse, Jay B. Greenberg, MD '75, BA '71; Beth W. Plavner, MA '79, and her spouse, Victor M. Plavner, MD '81; Matthew A. Weingold, MD '89, RESD '90, and his spouse, Jennifer Graham; and Daniel E. Weingold, MD '96, and his spouse, Barbara Weingold. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the Allan B. Weingold and James G. Sites Scholarship in the GW Obstetrics and Gynecology department. Contributions can be mailed to 2600 Virginia Ave., NW, Suite 355, Washington, DC 20037 or can be made online.

A memorial service and reception will be held on Monday, March 5, 2018 from 4-6 pm at Ross Hall, 2300 Eye Street NW, Washington, DC 20037.
