GW Heart & Vascular Institute Names 2012-13 Research Award Winners

The GW Heart & Vascular Institute is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2012-13 research awards: GW Cardiology Fellows David Cohen, M.D., and Miriam Fishman, M.D. The Institute supports the development of cardiovascular research projects through a grant-making program open to cardiology fellows at the George Washington University.

Cohen was awarded $25,000 to analyze the “Use of NADH fluorescence to predict lesion size after radiofrequency ablation.” Cohen will work alongside Marco Mercader, M.D., associate professor of medicine, GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS). The study is the next phase of Mercader’s groundbreaking work developing a new imaging catheter approach to refine the treatment of atrial fibrillation. 

Fishman also received $25,000 for her study “Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction: Is Management of Hypertension Associated with Changes in Traditional and Novel Echocardiographic Parameters?” Fishman will work under the guidance of Jannet Lewis, M.D., professor of medicine at SMHS. Fishman’s study will extend Lewis’s recent advances in the echo assessment of patients with hypertension. 

The 2011-12 award winners, Palak Shah, M.D., and Monica Mukherjee, M.D., presented their research results at the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (Prague, CZ) and the American Society of Echocardiography (Washington, D.C.) respectively.
