Learn about Kate Douglas, MD, MPH

Dr. Kate Douglass is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) and of Global Health at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at GW.

Her research interests center on international emergency medical systems development with an emphasis on sustainability, cost effectiveness, and effective educational interventions. Douglass also focuses on the global impact of road traffic injuries, and implications for emergency medical systems development.

She has extensive experience with international medical programs and policy initiatives, including projects in India, Saudi Arabia, Zambia, Turkey, Ethiopia, and Peru. Douglass currently directs 10 post-graduate emergency medicine education programs across India, graduating trained and qualified emergency physicians to address the nation’s injury epidemic and severe emergency medicine human resource shortage. Over her career, Douglass has worked with consensus groups at the national and international level to develop guidelines for trainees embarking upon global health experiences.

From 2021 to 2023, Douglass served as a senior technical clinical advisor for FHI 360, as part of the nonprofit human development organization’s global COVID response team. In this role, she supported the pandemic response planning for a robust profile of countries. Her passion for global emergency medicine systems development was bolstered by the COVID pandemic, a crisis that illustrated the universal need for effective emergency and acute care development.

Douglass earned her BS degree from Villanova University and her MD from Georgetown University. She completed her emergency medicine residency training at Drexel University. In addition, she completed a fellowship in international emergency medicine and earned her Master of Public Health degree from the George Washington University.

She currently serves as the Global Emergency Medicine Section Chief in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Tania Ahluwalia, MD, MPH, is the Director of Global Pediatrics at the Ronald Reagan Institute of Emergency Medicine at George Washington University (GW). She is a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Attending at Children’s National Hospital, and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at GW. Recognized for her leadership in global health, Dr. Ahluwalia has advanced distance education and capacity-building initiatives in low-resource settings, including India and other international sites, through developing simulation and tele-simulation curricula, collaborating with local educators, and supporting emergency medicine training programs.

Dr. Jinesh Veetilakath is currently the Head of the Department. of Emergency Medicine, at Aster MIMS Kannur, in Kerala, India.  In this position, with an immense passion for teaching, Dr. Jinesh is effectively and efficiently leading a competent team of Emergency Medical Practitioners, inculcating in them the core values of empathy, compassion, care, commitment and competence through personal example and leadership excellence.

Graduating from the T.D Medical college during 1998, and with the PG International Masters in Emergency Medicine Training from the George Washington University, USA during 2012-2015, Dr. Jinesh Commenced his professional / Academic Pursuit from Baby Memorial Hospital Calicut as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine.  He has since then held a multitude of professional leadership roles, including being an instructor in BLS, ACLS PALS, BDLS, ADLS, ATLS, culminating in the current responsibilities as Regional faculty of AHA.

Dr. Camilo E. Gutierrez is an internationally recognized Pediatric Emergency Physician with experience as a clinician, educator, and expert in international pediatric emergency care. Currently, Director of Global Health Programs for the Division of Emergency Medicine at Children’s National Hospital, and Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine, in Washington DC.  Dr. Gutierrez is a recognized speaker both locally and in over twenty countries where he has presented over 140 lectures and has authored over 60 publications.

He has established an international reputation as a leader, supporter, and promoter of the importance of pediatric emergency care in regions worldwide. He is sought after for his opinion, his capacity to network, craft partnerships and engage stakeholders as he advocates for the care of children globally.

Dr.Adriana Yock-Corrales M.D. MSc. is a Pediatric Emergency Physician from Costa Rica and Clinical Chief of the Emergency Department at the Hospital Nacional de Niños “Dr. Carlos Saenz Herrera” in Costa Rica. She did her Pediatric Residency at the National Children’s Hospital in San Jose and in 2008 went to Melbourne, Australia where she did her Pediatric Emergency Fellowship at the Royal Children’s Hospital. On 2012 she did a Master in Epidemiology Applied to Health Science at the National University in Costa Rica and in 2016 a Diplomat in Toxicology at the Universidad Católica of Chile. She currently is part of the teaching committee of the Emergency/Pediatric Residency Programs. She is Co-Chair of RIDEPLA (Red de Investigacion Pediatrica en Latino America) and involved in research studies with publications in peer-reviewed journals. Since 2014, she is part of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine SIG of IFEN. She is the International Affair Lead of the Asociación Costarricense de Médicos Emergenciólogos(ASOCOME) and part of the Executive Committee of the Pediatric Emergency Latinamerica Society (SLEPE).
