Learn about Meredith Wells

Meredith Wells is a fourth-year medical student at the George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS) and a previous Fulbright–Fogarty Fellow in Public Health based in Puno, Peru.

Her work focuses on the intersection of global health, environmental exposures, and vision loss. As part of the Household Air Pollution Intervention Network (HAPIN) study, Meredith leads an ancillary eye-health project investigating the impact of biomass fuel exposure, ultraviolet radiation, and nutritional factors on anterior segment disease among rural Andean women.

She has been deeply involved in global surgery and global ophthalmology advocacy through the Global Coalition for Global Surgery (GCCA), the G4 Alliance, and participation at the World Health Assembly, where she has championed the role of sustainable surgical systems and equitable eye-care delivery in resource-limited settings. Her broader research portfolio spans household air pollution, surgical workforce disparities, portable ophthalmic diagnostics, and case reports on rare ocular disease.

Meredith is passionate about medical education, culturally informed care, and strengthening local research capacity. She has previously conducted health systems research in Brazil as part of earlier Fulbright work and intends to build a career integrating clinical practice, global health research, and health-equity advocacy across the Americas.
