Description

Course Overview: Transition to Residency is specially designed to help each student individually better prepare for internship. Students are divided into specialty groups based on where they hope to match and will participate in sessions specific to that particular specialty, as well as in sessions with all or some classmates. To help students learn, you will be exposed to various learning modalities – lectures, small groups, workshops, simulation exercises, and online modules. This is a learning intensive month, but by the end of it, you are going to feel much more comfortable to be called Doctor.

As stated above, students are divided into specialty groups based on what specialty they hope to match in for residency. There are currently 10 specialty groups, some of which also take courses combined with other specialty groups depending on what their specialty requirements are for a preliminary year. The specialty groups are: Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Med-Peds, OB/GYN, Pathology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Radiology, and Surgery. While Dr. Anderson is the overall Transition to Residency Course Director, each specialty group also has its own Specialty Director.

Regardless of which field or specialty you may select, there are basic objectives we would like all students to achieve by the end of the course.

Course Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Practice formulating the care plan for patients with common medical conditions and specific life-threatening emergencies.
  2. Demonstrate effective communication skills in dealing with difficult topics, interpersonal challenges, and various medical conditions.
  3. Perform procedural interventions necessary for residency.
  4. Demonstrate ability to assess patients with a range of medical illnesses.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of system-based practice.
  6. Demonstrate the qualities required to sustain lifelong personal development and professional growth.
