Description

This elective will serve to further develop the participant’s skills in clinical and/or translational research. Students must participate in a clinical or translational research project for a minimum of 4 weeks (4-6 weeks is highly recommended, with a maximum of 8 weeks). Due to the nature of clinical and translational research, it is expected that activities related to this elective may have begun with previous summer experiences (Gill Fellowship; Health Services Scholarship; other) or project and extend throughout the senior year. Students must identify a research mentor for their project, and the research mentor must submit a course evaluation at the end of the elective time. Students must receive approval of their elective in advance by the track directors. The participant is evaluated on the basis of attendance at all required activities as determined by the mentor, feedback from the mentor, and the preparation of a manuscript suitable for peer review in a scientific journal, and/or presentation of a poster at a local or national meeting. Poster presentations should be distinct from previous submissions as an M2 at research day.

Course Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Engage in inquiry-based research under the guidance of a mentor.
  2. Apply the principles of the scientific method in a guided research project(s).
  3. Employ professional communication skills in reporting research results.
Additional Notes

Students will arrange their own research experiences with a faculty mentor. If student is doing research with a non-GW faculty mentor this must be approved by course directors. The Research Elective Request Form (Registration Form 2302-RE) found at "Forms for Students" on the MD Registrar website should be completed by the student and signed in advance of starting this elective.

Students should then upload the submitted Research Elective Request Form (Registration Form 2302-RE) to the Clinical and Translational Research (CTR) Blackboard site.

Research mentors should provide an evaluation of each student's performance and send to student and registrar; mentors can use the Abbreviated Evaluation & Grade Form (Grade Form 2302-AE) found at "Forms for Faculty & Staff" on the MD Registrar website.
