Description |
Cancer is one of the most common illnesses in this country. The primary care physician will be involved in the diagnosis and care of many cancer patients. Furthermore, many oncologists serve as primary care providers for their patients. This rotation introduces students including future generalist to aspects of cancer care that will be useful in their practice. Includes office assessment of the cancer patient; clinical courses of common malignancies; recognizing oncologist emergencies; supportive care principles - including pain management; cancer prevention and early detection. Students will participate in the evaluation and treatment of patients with hematological and oncologic disorders at the DC VA Medical Center. Students will typically see hematology patients in the morning (8am-12pm) and oncology patients in the afternoon (1pm-4pm) from Monday through Thursday. Friday is the day for bone marrow biopsies and hematology case conferences and inpatient rounds. |
Additional Notes |
Students rotating at the VA Medical Center must be on-boarded for security purposes. This process can take 6 weeks for new students. Please see the VA Medical Center Clerkship/AI website and carefully review the "General Information" and "VA Onboarding Information" documents. |
