Description

This elective provides exposure to both inpatient and outpatient management of patients with gynecologic cancer and pre-malignant conditions. The experiences gained in this elective are intended to broaden the student’s knowledge of gynecology and oncology and encourage independent and critical thinking. Students choosing this elective will be participating in aspects of inpatient and outpatient care that emphasize problem-solving, efficiency, clinical judgment and the independent development of patient assessments and plans.

Course Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Describe the risk factors, common presentations, diagnostic tests, and management options for gynecologic cancers (cervical, uterine, ovarian).
  2. Perform a comprehensive history in a sensitive and inclusive manner for a patient with gynecologic cancer.
  3. Identify key pelvic anatomy relevant to common GYN surgeries and describe the importance of these anatomic structures (i.e. hysterectomy, adnexal surgery, LEEP).
  4. Describe common postoperative complications and the first steps in management (post operative fever, low urine output, anemia).
  5. Independently perform skills such as foley/speculum placement, skin closure, knot tying and surgical instrument handling.
  6. Participate effectively as a member of the team in the operating room by assisting with the workflow, using sterile technique, and anticipating the needs of the team and using clear and effective communication.
