Description

Purpose and Rationale for the Course: The purpose of this elective is to build competency in providing patient-centered family planning care, including contraception and pregnancy options counseling (that is, medication and surgical termination of pregnancy), for clinical medical students who have completed the Ob/Gyn clerkship. In a rapidly evolving healthcare environment with increasing variation in access to reproductive services, this course is needed to ensure future physicians are well prepared to provide evidence-based, ethical, and compassionate family planning care.

Target Students: Clinical students with an interest in advancing their knowledge and experience regarding family planning.

Pre-requisites: Clinical students who have successfully completed their Ob/Gyn clerkship. This elective is meant to expand comfort and competency with family planning; as such, it is specifically suited for students who are interested and willing to provide and participate in abortion care.

Course Description: The student is responsible for seeing patients presenting to Family Planning clinics, under the supervision of GW faculty. They will begin by shadowing several providers to observe interview techniques and will then perform history taking. Physical exam skills will first be observed and eventually performed with direct and involved supervision by the attending. They are expected to complete notes for patients they are involved in evaluating by the end of the clinical day. They will attend procedures in the operating room as well as in the office.

Course Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Apply evidence-based clinical knowledge to counsel patients on contraceptive options, pregnancy intentions, and family planning care in a patient-centered manner.
  2. Practice effective, nonjudgmental communication skills when providing pregnancy options counseling that reflects patients’ values, goals, and circumstances.
  3. Integrate ethical principles and current clinical guidelines to navigate family planning care within diverse healthcare, institutional, and regulatory contexts.
  4. Recognize indications, contraindications, and common complications related to contraceptive methods.
