Description |
Description: Musculoskeletal conditions account for a majority of conditions seen in everyday medical practice. This elective is designed for the fourth year medical student who is interested in an introduction to orthopaedic surgery, is considering the field as a career choice, and would like to experience orthopaedic surgery at another institution. The Department of Orthopaedics at GWU believes that a well rounded education for the medical student is imperative, and does not recommend more than 3 months of the medical students’ 4th year be spent in orthopaedics. The student will need to individually investigate rotations at other institutions, and determine where they feel they would obtain the best possible education and experience. The rotation should permit exposure to orthopaedic preceptors in clinic and surgery, obtaining a comprehensive approach to the physicians’ approach to orthopaedic conditions, surgical interventions, and observation of postoperative patients. Increasing responsibility should be offered to the student, based on their individual abilities and participation. Students should be part of the discussion of treatment options with patients, and observe the process of decision making and informed consent required prior to surgery. Students will generally be expected to take call 5-8 times during the course of their four week block, and be expected to attend all education meetings of the department during their period on the service. Course Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

Additional Notes |
The department may permit selected students to spend one or more elective periods at other institutions (extramural or away electives). This course is available to GW students only. Extramural electives require the permission of the comparable course director at GW and the SMHS Dean’s Office. The student is responsible for arranging the extramural elective with the host institution (VSLO preferred). Extramural electives not arranged through VSLO/VSAS require an affiliation agreement with the host institution; if there is no current agreement on file this must be arranged at least 90 days in advance with the Dean’s Office. For all extramural electives, students must submit the mandatory Extramural Elective Request Form (Registration Form 2301-EA) located on the MD Registrar website to the Dean’s Office prior to the beginning date of the elective. |
