Description

IDIS 391-393 provides the option for students to complete an extramural/away rotation in family medicine. Please note the following:

  • The student is responsible for arranging the extramural elective with the host institution (VSLO preferred). Extramural electives not arranged through VSLO/VSAS require an affiliation agreement with the host institution; if there is no current agreement on file this must be arranged at least 90 days in advance with the Dean’s Office.
  • For all extramural electives, students must submit the mandatory Extramural Elective Request Form (Registration Form 2301-EA) located on the MD Registrar website to the Dean’s Office prior to the beginning date of the elective.

Additional Family Medicine Options:

  • For students seeking an outpatient primary care or family medicine elective with GW faculty in the DC region, please see MED 343 and inquire with Dr. Mia Marcus.
  • For students seeking an extramural/away Acting Internship in inpatient Family Medicine to meet GW SMHS’s core AI graduation requirement, see IDIS 390 (note that the extramural course must be be >80% inpatient and the student should verify with the Dean’s Office that it will suffice to meet the core AI graduation requirement).

Course Learning Objectives:

Students completing an extramural/away family medicine elective will be able to:

  1. Perform a complete and accurate history and physical exam in patients of varying ages, diagnoses, and complexity in a family medicine setting.
  2. Demonstrate the development of an evidence-based assessment and treatment plan for patients in a family medicine setting.
  3. Demonstrate effective oral and written case presentation skills for new patients and follow up care.
  4. Interpret the value of various tests and procedures in the work-up of patients in a family medicine setting.
  5. Apply medical standards, clinical practice guidelines and practice algorithms relevant to patients' medical conditions.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to navigate through consultations, care management services, and discussions with other health care providers across disciplines and health professions to ensure appropriate care coordination and transitions of care in a family medicine setting.
  7. Demonstrate appropriate professional and ethical behaviors related to patients and other health care professionals.
  8. Demonstrate empathic patient-centered communication when interpreting management plans, risks/benefits, end-of-life care, treatments and behavioral changes with patients and medical personnel.
Additional Notes
