Description

IDIS 390 provides the option for students to select an extramural (away) Acting Internship in inpatient family medicine to meet GW SMHS’s core AI graduation requirement. Please note the following:

  • The extramural course must must be >80% inpatient and the student should verify with the Dean’s Office that the extramural course will suffice to meet the core AI graduation requirement.
  • The student is responsible for arranging the extramural Acting Internship with the host institution (VSLO preferred). Extramural courses not arranged through VSLO/VSAS require an affiliation agreement with the host institution; if there is no current agreement on file this must be arranged at least 90 days in advance with the Dean’s Office.
  • For all extramural courses, students must submit the mandatory Extramural Elective Request Form (Registration Form 2301-EA) located on the MD Registrar website to the Dean’s Office prior to the beginning date of the elective.

Course Learning Objectives:

Students completing an extramural Family Medicine Acting Internship in a predominantly inpatient, family medicine service will be able to:

  1. Perform a complete and accurate history and physical exam in patients of varying ages, diagnoses, and complexity on an inpatient service.
  2. Demonstrate the development of an evidence-based assessment and treatment plan for patients admitted to the hospital, including discharge planning.
  3. Demonstrate effective oral and written case presentation skills for new patients and follow up care.
  4. Interpret the value of various tests and procedures in the work-up of a hospitalized patient.
  5. Apply medical standards, clinical practice guidelines and practice algorithms relevant to patients' medical conditions.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to navigate through specialty consultations, care management services, and discussions with other health care providers across disciplines and health professions to ensure appropriate care coordination and transitions of care.
  7. Demonstrate appropriate professional and ethical behaviors related to patients and other health care professionals.
  8. Demonstrate empathic patient-centered communication when interpreting management plans, risks/benefits, end-of-life care, treatments and behavioral changes with patients and medical personnel.
