Description

Course Description: This course involves independent reading of EKGs with supervision, discussion and review of relevant electrophysiologic topics via daily lectures. Students are tested at the end of the elective to confirm that they can interpret EKGs and identify appropriate management plans for EKG findings, based on the topics reviewed in the course lectures.

Course Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Identify EKG abnormalities to diagnose a range of cardiovascular diseases (e.g., atrial and ventricular hypertrophy, heart blocks, atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, ischemia/infarction, and other medical disorders).
  2. Describe basic management plans for cardiovascular diseases (e.g., atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, long QT/Torsades, acute myocardial infarction, hyperkalemia and other electrolyte disorders, cardiac tamponade, pericarditis, complete heart block, and cardiac arrest).
  3. Identify and describe basic management plans for pacemaker malfunction.
