Sterling, VA—Elizabeth Wiley, JD, MPH, a fourth year medical student at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, has been elected to serve as the national president of the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), the nation’s oldest and largest, independent association for physicians-in-training. Wiley will work full-time at AMSA’s national office, right outside of Washington, D.C., where she will chair the Board of Trustees, maintain alliances with other organizations and visit AMSA chapters across the country.
“AMSA is an exceptional organization that inspires a community of future physicians through education and advocacy,” says Wiley. “I’m honored and excited to serve as national president during this pivotal election year, in which there are so many issues affecting patients and physicians-in-training at stake. On priorities including access to medical education and student debt, health care reform, HIV/AIDS and reproductive justice, I look forward to working with AMSA members across the country to ensure the next generation of future physicians have a voice on Capitol Hill and beyond in the coming elections."
Prior to being elected president, Wiley served two terms on the Board of Trustees as the Vice President of Internal Affairs and National Secretary. A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Liz attended Smith College. Upon finishing her undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Women's Studies, she spent two years teaching middle school in Detroit with Teach for America. Liz then completed a J.D. and M.P.H. (Health Policy) at the University of Michigan. In 2007, she was awarded a Fulbright grant and spent the 2007-2008 academic year conducting health services research in Norway.
