The GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) is pleased to welcome Sharon Boyd, who will serve as a senior advisor to the dean and vice president for health affairs (VPHA). In this role, Boyd is responsible for directing all facets of administration and support for the dean/VPHA and the SMHS leadership team. She will also serve as a member of the SMHS leadership team and will collaborate with team members to meet the priorities and goals of SMHS.

I am looking forward to working closely with Ms. Boyd, as we position SMHS for preeminence,” said Jeffrey S. Akman, MD ’81, RESD ‘85, vice president for health affairs, Walter A. Bloedorn Professor of Administrative Medicine, and dean of SMHS.
Boyd joins SMHS from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), where she most recently served as a senior public health advisor. She was the principal public health advisor for non-communicable disease issues to the deputy assistant secretary for health (Science and Medicine). She also managed relationships across HHS and coordinated with inter-agency and external partners on topics related to nutrition and physical activity. She led an HHS-wide working group on obesity, physical activity, and nutrition.
Prior to working at HHS, Boyd served as a public health advisor at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In this role, she served as Washington the policy lead and representative for several high-profile CDC Centers. She also worked in Liberia for CDC’s Ebola response.
She has held positions with the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions and the White House Council of Economic Advisers. In addition, Boyd completed an internship with the White House Office of Management and Budget. She is also the recipient of several awards and honors, including the Presidential Management Fellowship and the CDC Distinguished Service in Public Health Policy Award.
Boyd holds a Master in Public Affairs degree and a Certificate in Health and Health Policy from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Brandeis University.

Boyd began the role of the Senior Advisor to the Dean and Vice President for Health Affairs on April 23, 2018.
