The George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine at Health Sciences (SMHS) named Scott D. Krugman, MD, as the new Senior Associate Dean for the LifeBridge Health/GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences Regional Medical Campus (RMC) at LifeBridge Health’s Sinai Hospital.
In this new position, Krugman, who currently serves as vice chair of pediatrics at the Herman and Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital at Sinai and clinical professor of pediatrics at GW SMHS, will report to GW SMHS Dean Barbara Lee Bass, MD, RESD ’86, and work collaboratively with Senior Associate Dean for MD Programs Richard J. Simons, MD, to provide oversight on all educational and administrative activities at the regional campus.
“Dr. Krugman’s experience in strategic planning, curriculum management, and faculty development, as well as his broad clinical background as both a pediatrician and epidemiologist serving the Baltimore-Washington region, make him the ideal person to help fulfill the medical education mission of the Regional Medical Campus,” said Bass. “His leadership skills will help ensure the integration of regional campus faculty with the main campus, while offering the same high standard of student services and curricular training.”
GW and LifeBridge Health established the RMC to offer third- and fourth-year GW medical students the opportunity to train in a community-focused health system with strong emphasis on primary and continuity care in a population health environment. After completing their first two years of coursework at GW’s Foggy Bottom campus in Spring 2023, 11 third-year medical students became the inaugural cohort at the RMC. Students will complete a full year of clerkships during the third year and specialty electives during the fourth year at Sinai Hospital and the LifeBridge Health system sites.
As Senior Associate Dean, Krugman will serve as the primary administrative link between the GW SMHS and the LifeBridge Health System. He will oversee all operations at the RMC and ensure the delivery of a high-quality clinical phase of the medical education LifeBridge Health program. He also will continue his clinical practice at LifeBridge Health’s Sinai Hospital.
“The Regional Medical Campus is a community-focused health system with strong emphasis on primary and continuity care in a population health,” said Simons. “Dr. Krugman’s appointment will help guaranteed that those GW students seeking clinical training in an environment that is different, but complementary to the clinical experience at Foggy Bottom, can do so at the same high standard GW students have received for the past two hundred years.”
Krugman brings extensive leadership experience in planning, budgeting/finance, hiring, developing, and management, mentoring and guiding faculty members to achieve their professional goals. Prior to joining Sinai Hospital in 2018, Krugman was chair of the Department of Pediatrics at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, Baltimore. He also has served as a clinical faculty member in both the pediatrics and epidemiology departments at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and was an associate dean for Medical Education at Georgetown University School of Medicine.
He has published extensively on a host of pediatric health topics, including child abuse, pediatric asthma, the implementation of anti-racist policies, and training challenges in the care of children in family medicine residency programs. Krugman also has been a reviewer for multiple prominent journals and currently serves on the editorial board of the journal Pediatrics.
Krugman is a member of many state and national professional societies and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Pediatric Society. Among his many honors, Krugman received American Academy of Pediatrics Special Achievement Award and the Maryland Chapter American Academy of Pediatrics Pediatrician of the Year Award in 2015; he has been named “Top Doctor” by Baltimore Magazine in 2016–18 and 2023; and in 2022 he earned the Maryland Chapter American Academy of Pediatrics Michael Burke MD Mentorship Award.
