The George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Laura K. Green, MD, FACS, as the new Assistant Dean for Student Affairs for the GW Regional Medical Campus (RMC) at LifeBridge Health — expanding the team supporting GW’s medical students completing their clinical rotations at the Baltimore, Maryland, facility.

Green brings a distinguished career in medical education, academic leadership, and surgical training innovation to GW SMHS, where she will help support and expand the school’s commitment to excellence in student development and well-being.

In her new role, Green will serve as an advocate and key point of contact for students, helping to ensure that student affairs processes mirror the policies and procedures of GW’s main campus in Washington, D.C. As part of her responsibilities, Green will develop and implement programs, activities, and student enrichment services that support the needs and foster personal growth and professional development of students at the RMC.

“Dr. Green has a rare ability to bridge deep national leadership experience with day-to-day, hands-on support for medical students,” said Lorenzo Norris, MD, interim senior associate dean for MD programs. “Her dedication to inclusive, competency-based education and her background in mentoring and faculty development will be an incredible asset to our students and faculty alike.”

GW SMHS and LifeBridge Health announced the launch of the RMC based at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore in November 2022. The RMC campus offers GW SMHS medical students the opportunity to train in a community-focused health system in an intimate environment with a strong emphasis on primary and continuity care.

“Dr. Green’s impressive leadership in medical education, her passion for student advocacy, and her longstanding commitment to equity in academic medicine make her an ideal fit for this important role,” said Scott Krugman, senior associate dean for the GW RMC at LifeBridge Health. “We are thrilled to welcome her to the SMHS community and look forward to the positive impact she will make at the RMC.”

Green will join the GW team, reporting to Krugman, after nearly two decades at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore where she served as Vice Chair for Faculty Development and led the ophthalmology residency program at the Krieger Eye Institute from 2010 to 2024. A nationally recognized leader in medical education, she is known for her work advancing diversity and inclusion in medicine, innovative surgical training methods, and graduate medical education reform.

Green serves as the incoming Chair of the Council of Review Committee Chairs at the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) — a position that includes voting roles on both the Executive Committee and Board of Directors. She previously chaired the ACGME’s Ophthalmology Review Committee, leading major revisions to national training requirements, and represents Ophthalmology in the ABMS/ACGME Competency-Based Medical Education forum.

In addition, Green was the recipient of the 2022 Straatsma Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology and is the first ophthalmologist inducted into the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators of the American College of Surgeons. She is a founding member and former chair of GME:ICLER (Inclusive Clinical Learning Environment for Residents) at Sinai Hospital, and has previously contributed to the GW SMHS Committee on the Clinical Learning Environment. She also served as the ombudsperson for the GW RMC, further deepening her ties to the Baltimore-based campus and its students.

Originally from Oakton, Virginia, Green earned her bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from the College of William and Mary and her medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. She completed her ophthalmology residency at Harvard Medical School’s Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and a fellowship in cornea and external disease at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University.

Green begins her new role with GW on July 1, 2025.
