The cholera outbreak in Haiti is part of a worldwide pandemic that began 50 years ago. Peter Hotez, M.D., Ph.D., Distinguished Research Professor, Walter G. Ross Professor and chair of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Tropical Medicine in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, says cholera is one of the fastest killers because it produces toxins that damage the intestines and it takes all the water out of a person's body.
