About Dr. Scott Shapiro: Scott Shapiro, MD, is a specialist in Cardiac Electrophysiology with The GW Medical Faculty Associates, Director of Arrhythmia Services at George Washington University Hospital, and an assistant professor of medicine at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences. He did the majority of his training at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, NY where he served as Chief Resident in the Department of Medicine. He returned to Columbia for a fellowship in clinical cardiac electrophysiology after completing his general cardiology fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital. After joining a private practice in Metropolitan Washington, his interest in academic medicine brought him to The GW Medical Faculty Associates, where he combines high quality cardiac care with teaching and research.
Clinically, Dr. Shapiro specializes in catheter ablation for treatment of arrhythmias, with special interest in atrial fibrillation. He also specializes in placement of pacemakers and defibrillators. Finally, he focuses his clinical time on arrhythmia consultation and general cardiology consultation. Dr. Shapiro has a strong research background having completed his M.D., Ph.D. at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His thesis project was in the area of cell biology and immunology. In the field of cardiology, Dr. Shapiro has investigated gene therapy as a method of cardiac regeneration, as well as, utilizing advanced imaging modalities to assess efficacy of this treatment. In addition, he has published research on the genetics of sudden cardiac death in children due to mutations in enzymes of metabolism.
