The National Library of Medicine's travelling exhibit will be showcased at the Himmelfarb Library from June 16-July 26.
A portrait of George Washington

The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences is pleased to announce the opening of the National Library of Medicine's travelling exhibit, “Every Necessary Care & Attention: George Washington & Medicine,” at the Himmelfarb Library.

As head of household, plantation owner, businessman, Revolutionary War general, and president, George Washington had many different concerns and responsibilities, from running his estate to ensuring the stability of a new nation. This exhibit will explore George Washington’s own health and examine the ways in which he sought to safeguard the health and wellness of his family, staff, slaves, and troops. Also discussed is the broader context of the experience of illness and the practice of medicine, which during his time was transitioning from a traditional healer craft to a profession.

The exhibit will open with a reception on June 16. Denver Brunsman, Ph.D., associate professor of history at the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, will give a short keynote presentation on George Washington’s life. He will be joined by Mea Clift, a historical re-enactor, who will display surgical instruments from the 18th Century. Refreshments will be served.

The exhibit will remain at the Himmelfarb Library until July 26.
