The George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) is pleased to announce that Ellen Goldman, Ed.D. ‘05, M.B.A., has been named assistant dean for faculty and curriculum development in medical education.
"In the context of our strategic efforts to invest in faculty development and curriculum enhancement, I am thrilled that Dr. Ellen Goldman, a nationally recognized leader in medical education, has joined the SMHS leadership team," said Jeffrey S. Akman, M.D. '81, RESD '85, Walter A. Bloedorn Professor of Administrative Medicine, vice president for health affairs at GW, and dean of SMHS. "Ellen's expertise will help our faculty take SMHS to the next level in accomplishing our goals of excellence not just in learning, but in teaching, as well."
As the assistant dean for faculty and curriculum development in medical education, Goldman will provide leadership for the development activities that enhance individual and collective faculty capacity in teaching excellence, educational leadership, and education-related research. She will continue to provide direction for faculty development in the revision of the undergraduate medical school curriculum, and oversee the Master Teacher Leadership Development Program.
Goldman also serves as an associate professor of human and organizational learning at the GW Graduate School of Education and Human Development. She teaches master’s and doctoral level courses on leadership and learning, and supervises dissertation research. Goldman received GW’s Morton A. Bender Teaching Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2014 and is a member of the GW Academy of Distinguished Teachers. Her scholarship focuses on leadership development to enhance individual and organizational performance. Her research identifying work experiences that contribute to the development of expertise in strategic thinking resulted in her receiving the Richard A. Swanson Research Excellence Award, a “best” article of the year from the Journal of Strategy and Management, and an award from the Academy of Management. For the past three years, she has provided expertise to the Fort Leavenworth Research Unit of the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral Sciences and Social Sciences as part of their “Strategic Thinking for Command” project.
Goldman also publishes on learning and leadership development in medical training and professional development programs. She has collaborated with medical and health sciences faculty on research that has appeared in Academic Medicine, Anatomical Sciences Education, Clinical Pediatrics, Diabetes Spectrum, the Journal of Graduate Medical Education, the Journal of General Internal Medicine, the Journal of Healthcare Management, and Medical Science Educator. Since 2010, Goldman has served as the research advisor to the Children’s Academy of Pediatric Educators at Children’s National Health System.
Goldman came to GW after 30 years as a health care executive and consultant. She has worked with more than 300 hospitals and healthcare systems to craft corporate, business and programmatic strategy; assess and implement mergers; identify acquisitions and other growth initiatives, and develop board and managerial leadership. Goldman holds a B.A. from Tufts University in Economics and in Community Health, an M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh, and an Ed.D. from the GW Graduate School of Education and Human Development.
Goldman assumed this role on Oct. 1, 2014.
