The George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences’ Brian Choi, MD, professor of medicine, and David Kauffman, second year medical student, will present at the upcoming HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition (HIMSS20), March 9-13, 2020 in Orlando, Florida.
Choi and Kauffman will be presenting at an HIMSS20 Education Session on "Optimizing Technology Solutions for Medicare Quality Payment Program Success." As the U.S. health care system shifts towards value-based reimbursement models, organizations must make technology investments that make sense for their practice. By inputting performance history and anticipated revenue into a model created by Choi and Kauffman, organizations can calculate future Medicare payment incentives from the Medicare Incentive Payment System (MIPS) — the largest quality payment program in the U.S. The model demonstrates that larger organizations stand to gain the greatest financial incentives through technology investment, while smaller organizations, contrary to the stated goals of MIPS, may be incentivized not to invest in new technology. Choi and Kauffman’s research shows that scale is the key to success for quality payment programs such as MIPS.
“We expect the incentives of these programs, whether by intention or inadvertent, will lead to increasingly rapid consolidation of provider groups,” said Choi, who is also the chief medical information officer at the GW Medical Faculty Associates. “Barring new regulatory relief, we expect to see provider organizations grow to unprecedented size through consolidation over the next few years as the incentive payments and penalties grow in magnitude.”
