Description

This two-week elective will offer participation in patient care at a multi-site outpatient private practice, specializing in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Common clinical problems will include menstrual disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, recurrent pregnancy loss, fertility preservation, primary ovarian insufficiency, and infertility. Students will take part in daily assessment and management of patients. In addition, students will be able to observe diagnostic, operative, and therapeutic procedures, including pelvic ultrasound, hysterosalpingogram, hysteroscopy, and in-vitro fertilization (e.g., oocyte retrievals, embryo transfers, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, preimplantation genetic testing). Involvement in clinical research about IVF outcomes and/or embryology laboratory experience in in vitro fertilization is available.

Course Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Describe the initial evaluation of a couple presenting with infertility.
  2. Describe the common treatments for infertility such as ovulation induction, IUI, IVF, PGT and indications for each treatment.
  3. Observe procedures and describe complications such as oocyte retrieval, IUI, hysteroscopy, saline infusion sonogram and HSG.
  4. Describe the evaluation and initial management of patients with amenorrhea, recurrent pregnancy loss, PCOS, and endometriosis.
