Description

The goal of the Health Services Research elective is to provide an opportunity for medical students to explore, through inquiry, an area such as access to, and the use, costs, quality, delivery, organization, financing, and/or outcomes of health care services for individuals and populations. Student will arrange their own research experiences as approved by the course director, though the Department of Medicine can assist in this process. Faculty will act as advisors for the project. All non-GW faculty advisors must be approved by the course director. Exchange with similar program in other institutions is possible.

Course Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Describe the fundamentals of health services issues.
  2. Generate patient-centered question(s) to drive knowledge acquisition when designing a health services research project.
  3. Apply sound methodology and analysis.
  4. Demonstrate scientific writing skills through an internal report and, ideally, peer-reviewed submission.
Additional Notes

The Research Elective Request Form (Registration Form 2302-RE) found at "Forms for Students" on the MD Registrar website should be completed by the student and signed in advance of starting this elective. Students must complete this form and obtain approval from both the clerkship director and faculty advisor at least a month prior to the elective start date. Failure to obtain approval in a timely manner may result in your not being eligible to participate in this elective. If you are proposing a data collection/analysis project, please provide details on where and how you will be obtaining the data. If you are utilizing research data, you must provide documentation of IRB approval.

Research mentors should provide an evaluation of each student's performance and send to student and registrar; mentors can use the Abbreviated Evaluation & Grade Form (Grade Form 2302-AE) found at "Forms for Faculty & Staff" on the MD Registrar website.
