Evaluation

Course evaluation is based on clinical performance (Uniform Clinical Evaluation) as well as brief topic presentation and paper at the conclusion of the rotation.

Description

This course is designed for the 4th year medical student to participate in preconception, antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum care of women with complicated pregnancies and/or risk factors for developing complicated pregnancies. This rotation includes exposure to prenatal ultrasound, prenatal diagnosis and genetic counseling. The student will work with residents and faculty in Maternal Fetal Medicine at GWU Hospital and the MFA outpatient clinic.

Course Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Primarily manage hospitalized patients with obstetric complications including creating plans of care, coordinating consulting services, discussing at multidisciplinary sign outs.
  2. Demonstrate ability to independently counsel patient about routine prenatal care components including immunizations, contraception, preeclampsia precautions.
  3. Perform basic procedures in the operating room such as positioning a patient appropriately, closing incisions at cesarean, assisting with retraction at cerclage.
  4. Describe obstetric ultrasound indications and demonstrate ability to interpret basic images.
  5. Apply knowledge of reproductive genetic screening and testing to individual patients and interpret results.
  6. Critically analyze primary literature on an obstetric topic and create an evidence based presentation and paper.
