Report |
Students will be sent information prior to rotation. |
Evaluation |
Evaluations are based on clinical examination skills, charting, rapport with patients, teamwork, inquisitiveness, fund of knowledge, and ability to acquire skills and knowledge. There are many informal quiz-like sessions based on patient presentations and clinical photographs. Many rotators engage in scholarly endeavors (such as preparation of a case report for publication). |
Description |
This elective course presents an opportunity for medical students to learn the nature and scope of Pediatric Dermatology. Students will be active members of the Pediatric Dermatology Service, participating in outpatient clinic and inpatient consultation rounds. Students will attend formal dermatology didactic conferences, lectures, and Grand Rounds. This rotation is designed in particular for medical students who plan for careers in Pediatrics or Dermatology. You will learn about common pediatric skin conditions as well as complex pediatric concerns, such as congenital, infectious, parasitic, neoplastic, and secondary disorders caused by underlying systemic conditions. Rotating students interact mostly with Dermatology Residents. There are opportunities to work with Children’s National Pediatric Residents who are also enrolled in the elective. Most conferences are dermatologic in nature, although there are opportunities to attend general pediatric conferences on days spent at the main hospital. Personal transportation is helpful to attend clinics (although hospital shuttle services and public transportation suffice in most cases). No weekends or call. |
Additional Notes |
The start and finish dates of an elective in Pediatric Dermatology may be off-cycle. In other words, it is not essential for the dates of one’s Pediatric Dermatology elective to coincide perfectly with the GWU or CNMC rotation calendar. |
