Uniform Clinical Evaluation

Description

Clinical experience in endocrinology and metabolism at the DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Students examine endocrine patients, make preliminary diagnoses, and assist in treatment. Clinical rounds daily; weekly endocrine clinic, weekly review of abnormal laboratory tests, diabetic clinic and Journal Club, case discussions, didactic lectures. Weekly endocrine reviews based on assigned reading.

Course Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate basic skills in obtaining a history and performing a physical exam pertinent to Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism in both the inpatient and outpatient settings at the VA Medical Center.
  2. Identify common endocrine and metabolic conditions including etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of major and rare endocrine conditions (diabetes, thyroid, lipid abnormalities, metabolic bone disease, pituitary, adrenal, male/female reproductive disorders).
  3. Perform oral case presentations that are organized, appropriately detailed and endocrine-focused.
  4. Compose medical notes that are organized, appropriately detailed and endocrine-focused.
  5. Discuss indications for appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests for endocrine diseases.
  6. Describe diabetes management utilizing diabetes technology i.e. continuous glucose monitors and/or insulin pumps.
