Course Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Define disaster medicine.
  2. Describe the unique aspects of disaster medicine's various subtypes/subspecialties.
  3. Explain the biological, psychological, and social impacts of disasters and terrorism on individuals and communities.
  4. Differentiate between the types of injuries caused by natural and human-caused disasters and how they are medically managed.
  5. Contrast the roles and responsibilities of federal, state, and local disaster response agencies.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to implement concepts from the incident command system given a hypothetical disaster situation.
  7. Apply the concepts of mass casualty triage during a practical exercise.
  8. Evaluate current healthcare system and community vulnerabilities during a disaster.
  9. Formulate mitigation strategies for disaster related vulnerabilities.
