Training & Education

Providing accurate, clear and understandable information about heart disease.

Visiting Professors

The GW Heart & Vascular Institute enhances the educational experience of our GW medical residents and cardiology fellows by inviting renowned cardiologists and master teachers to serve as visiting professors.

Understein Memorial Visiting Professor

The Understein Memorial Lecture Fund was established in 1978 by the family of Jack Understein, in gratitude for the care provided at GW. The Institute is grateful to the Understein family for their generous contribution that makes this annual lectureship and tribute to their father possible. Jack Understein’s sons, Norman Understein, Robert Understein and Gary Understein, often attend this program.

Bloedorn Interdisciplinary Cardiology Lecture Series

In 2016, the Walter A. Bloedorn Foundation supported an innovative interdisciplinary cardiovascular education program, the Bloedorn Interdisciplinary Cardiology Lecture Series. These conferences bring nationally recognized medical experts to GW’s medical campus to discuss cross disciplinary topics including the interface of heart disease with cancer, kidney disease, diabetes, and nervous system disorders. This educational series enhances both our cardiology knowledge and creates a forum to better integrate colleagues across GW engaging faculty and trainees from multiple medical specialties.

P. Jacob Varghese Visiting Professor and GW Cardiology Fellows Alumni Reception

Graduates of the GW Cardiology Fellowship program join current cardiology faculty and fellows annually for the P. Jacob Varghese Visiting Professorship and Alumni Reception.

Cardiology Grand Rounds Webinars

In an effort to expand our audience and impact of professional medical education to cardiologist the Institute’s cardiology grand rounds is broadcast live via Webinar and is recorded and archived on GW’s Department of Continuing Medical Education Website. These lectures are available for free to cardiologists across the US including alumni of the GW Cardiology Fellowship Program and GW School of Medicine. The Webinar series is sponsored by a generous donation from Dr. Azita Moalemi, a GW Cardiology Fellowship alum.

Symposia

Faculty and Fellows participate in Institute-sponsored symposia to share best practices in cardiology with clinicians and professors involved in multidisciplinary cardiac care throughout the country.

Annual Heart Failure and Arrhythmia Conference

Drs. Marco Mercader, Associate Professor of Medicine, Director of Electrophysiology Research, and Gurusher Panjrath, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Director of Heart Failure and Mechanical Support Program, co-chaired this symposium in Washington, DC annually. The symposium, provides clinicians involved in cardiac care with an update on best practices and cutting-edge care regarding heart failure, arrhythmias, valve disease, and coronary artery disease.

Fellows Education and Training

The GW Cardiology Fellowship program led by Dr. Allen Solomon, is a three-year comprehensive clinical cardiology training program designed to prepare the next generations of cardiologists for careers in clinical or academic medicine. Outstanding candidates may pursue a fourth year of advanced training to specialize in electrophysiology, led by Dr. Cynthia Tracy, or in interventional cardiology, led by Drs. Jonathan Reiner and Ramesh Mazhari. Annually, the Institute provides training to eight core cardiology fellows and supports one to two electrophysiology fellows and two interventional cardiology fellows.

Fellows participate in academic research studies provided by the Institute’s Annual Young Investigator Awards. For more information on graduate fellowships in cardiology, please visit: GW SMHS Cardiology Division.
