Ultrasound Imaging

Ultrasound is a busy hands-on section where residents work closely with sonographers (ultrasound technicians) and often interact directly with patients. Ultrasound reads all ER and inpatient studies, as well as outpatient studies from GWH and our K St and 19th St Imaging Centers. Common imaging includes OB/GYN imaging (pelvic and 1st-2nd trimester pregnancies), abdominal (complete, right upper quadrant and renal), arterial/venous/dialysis access vascular studies and thyroid imaging. We also read neonatal head US from our NICU

As part of the rotation, we do a significant number of US-guided procedures including liver biopsies, paracenteses, thoracenteses, fine needle aspirations of nodules and fluid collection aspirations. The ultimate goal of this rotation is for residents to learn to scan patients in an efficient and successful manner, to be familiar with normal anatomy and be able to recognize abnormal findings.

Schedule
