Body Imaging (CT/MRI)

Residents rotate through Body Imaging throughout their four years. This high-volume and fast-paced division covers all ER and inpatient cross-sectional studies (CT/MRI). They also read outpatient imaging performed at GWH and the nearby K St NW imaging center.

Residents are given graduated responsibility in study protocol and interpretation, as well as performance of CT guided procedures. Residents triage, consent, perform and follow-up CT guided procedures often starting as early as the end of their R1 year.

Schedule

The service begins daily at 7:30 AM with morning readout involving an attending physician, the overnight call resident, and an incoming resident. Overnight ER/inpatient studies are reviewed and the overnight resident is offered direct feedback on his/her interpretation. There are several weekly Body Imaging conferences, including informal resident-run case conferences and multidisciplinary conferences.

Yearly Rotation

R1s rotate for 8 weeks on service with a focus on CT interpretation as they prepare for call.

R2s-R4s: Rotate for minimum of 4 weeks/year on daytime service in addition to reading a large volume of body CT on call. R2-R4 rotations devote increased daytime responsibility to body/pelvic MR interpretation.

R4s may also elect to perform a 3 month mini-fellowship in Body CT/MRI.
