We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you as a new resident or fellow to The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Whether you are just graduating from medical school or have been in training at another institution, we hope you have a smooth transition to GW SMHS. Orientation Dates

PGY 1:

June 16, 17 & 18

This mandatory orientation is for all first-year residents who have never participated in post-graduate training.

PGY 2 and above:

July 1 & 2

This mandatory orientation is for fellows and for residents who are new to GW and have completed at least one year of post-graduate training.

Orientation Parking:

The Academic Center Parking Garage on Eye (I) Street between 21st and 22nd Streets.

To facilitate getting you on-board and ready for your training, there are documents, tasks and training modules that need to be completed prior to your start date. Certain documents require “original” signatures  or ask for personal protected information (SSN, DOB) and must be returned to the GME Office by US Mail. Others may be faxed or e-mailed as indicated.

District of Columbia Board of Medicine Requirements
In order to begin training in the District of Columbia, all residents and fellows must have an unrestricted medical license in the District of Columbia or hold a Medical Training License (MTL) in the District of Columbia.

GW Hospital Network Access Form (OPUS)

Click link and follow instructions; Call 202-715-4955 with any questions.

Complete the Online Training Module for your program:

  • Emergency Medicine Physicians have a specific module.
  • Inpatient Physicians module (all programs except EMed, Radiology, and Pathology complete this module)
  • Radiology and Pathology Residents do not have an online module. Read the Provider Forms Instructions, and complete forms as appropriate.

The University Benefits Office staff will attend orientation to explain your benefits to you, provide an opportunity to ask questions, and assist you with completing online enrollment following the Orientation presentation. Parking Benefits

GW residents and fellows receive free parking during working hours at GW. Vehicles parked on GW property must be registered and a valid parking sticker must be displayed. You may register more than one vehicle, but only one vehicle at a time may be parked in a University garage. University Parking office will be available to distribute parking assignments and stickers. You will need to bring your vehicle registration with you to orientation.
