The Guided Pathway to The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences BSHS in Medical Genetics and Molecular Biology Program focuses on the molecular and genetic theory and techniques used to diagnose and monitor disease, detect risk, and make patient treatment decisions. Molecular testing is used in a variety of medical specialties, including infectious disease, oncology, human leukocyte antigen typing, forensics, identity testing, and pharmacogenomics. By analyzing the specific biological markers of a patient, medical genetics and molecular biology offers the prospect of personalized medicine. Students who complete this program will be eligible to take the Technologist exam in Molecular Biology offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
Admission/Eligibility Requirements
- Completion of an applicable associate degree from a partner community college.
- A cumulative GPA of 2.75 is required on the GW-GAA partner transcript. If additional transcripts exist, a cumulative GPA that includes all institutions must be a minimum of 2.7.
- Science GPA of 2.50 in prerequisite science courses.
- Completed each transferable coursework with a grade of C (C minus will not meet the requirement) or higher.
- If a science prerequisite is repeated, all grades will be factored into the GPA.
- Completed GW application process.
- Students applying to BSHS/MSHS dual degree programs must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater.
